International Community Day with Tanja Laub
Held on October 8th, International Community Day aims to celebrate communities and their contributions. The initiative invites communities to share, inspire, learn from, and support a variety of other communities from all backgrounds.
On this episode of Talk About Your Community, Todd Nilson of Clocktower Advisors is joined by Tanja Laub, a community strategist and founder of Walkabout Media. For 10 years, she has been consulting and training companies, associations, NGOs and agencies in all aspects of community management.

3:10: Tanja starts with how she got involved in community, starting with assisting in building the German YouTube. Todd and Tanja discuss how having a diverse career path lends itself to having a multitude of skills to bring into community building.
11:11: Moving to International Community Day, two years ago Tanja realized how many different events happened on October 8th by coincidence. So a team got together to create the event. Todd chimes in to speak about the uncertainty the pandemic brought, and how ICD brings together the virtual community space. Tanja explains why she enjoys building online communities with an opportunity for in-person events.
22:46: Tanja shares her experience of Germans/Europeans embracing the concept of online communities. She feels far behind in Germany because digitalization is a nightmare. Todd clarifies internal communities refers to groups such as digital workplaces.
28:30: When asked what keeps her intrigued and what’s caught her attention in the community space, Tanja says she has no idea what is going to happen and how it’s going to impact development due to external forces in Germany. Both Tanja and Todd speak about the potential of technology removing the language barriers within communities.
